The government has pledged greater transparency across the public sector through publishing open data to strengthen public accountability. The Local Public Data Panel has been set up to oversee the release of local public data.

What are the licence conditions?
Most of the open data is available under the UK Open Government licence which allows sharing and reuse for commercial purposes.

What are other local authorities doing?
All authorities in England are being encouraged to provide open data as part of the government's transparency agenda. In particular they are expected to provide details of monthly spend and contracts over £500 by January 2011.
A list of authorities which have open data is published on the Openly Local and the data.gov.uk websites. There is discussion about the issues on the Local Data Panel on data.gov.uk and Communities of Practice websites.
